In over forty years of working together, there are only two feature length films where John Williams has not scored the music for a Steven Spielberg movie. Until recently in 2015, Williams scored every Spielberg feature but 1985's The Color Purple. This movie was the first time that Williams did not provide the musical score for the Steven Spielberg film. Thus, over the years, their collaborations have specifically resulted in incredibly iconic musical themes, like those for Jaws and Jurassic Park.

In 2015, instead of John Williams, composer Thomas Newman, who did American Beauty, scored Spielberg's intriguing film, a cold war thriller called Bridge of Spies. This film is truly a historical drama and legal thriller. Also this feature length film directed by Spielberg is the second for which John Williams did not compose the musical score.

Bridge of Spies is a film that is actually directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, written by Matt Charman, Ethan and Joel Coen and stars Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan and Alan Alda. It is directly based upon the 1960 U-2 incident which occurred during America's Cold War period.
