On the 1960s U.S. TV sitcom "Hogan's Heroes", Oberfeldwebel Hans Schultz (played by John Banner) is one of the main fictional characters. He appeared in this clever and funny sitcom from September 1965 to April 1971 on the CBS TV network. Schultz was best known for his "I know nothing" phrase, and he was also fond of calling someone a "jolly joker" if they smart off too often about the war and actions occurring within the the POW camp.

At the core of this show, under the direction of Col. Robert Hogan (Bob Crane), the prisoners of Stalag 13 are in complete control of their POW camp. They are men who are living in style and doing everything imaginable to confound the German Army, the command of their prison, and those supporting the German in their WW II efforts.

The men known as Hogan Heroes took actions that included espionage and sabotage of Nazi combat plans. Their schemes at Stalag 13 are made possible by hapless actions, bribes, and playful fraternization within the camp. Hans Schultz is a guy who by his non-actions ("I know nothing!", "I see nothing!" or "I hear nothing!") allowed Allied schemes to routinely happen. The Allied needed more men like Schultz!
