In 1981, the Colorado State University Rams became the first team in NCAA Division 1-A college football history to lose 12 games in a single season. Prior to 2006, teams were allowed to play only 11 regular season games unless they played a road game at Hawaii. Under then NCAA rules, teams that played a road game on the islands were allowed to schedule an extra game to help offset the cost of travel. The Rams lost all 12 games including a 59-6 loss to Hawaii to set the dubious mark.

The closest Colorado State, located 60 miles north of Denver in Fort Collins, came to winning a game that season were a 37-27 loss to Mississippi State and a 35-29 setback at Texas-El Paso.

Rams head coach Sark Arslanian was fired after a 0-6 start and was followed by Chester Caddas, who also went 0-6.
