The Sound of Music was the last musical written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. Oscar Hammerstein died of cancer nine months after the Broadway premiere of this show on November 16, 1959. This team produced other musicals and five of their Broadway shows, Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music, were outstanding successes.The original Broadway production of the Sound of Music, featured Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. It won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, out of nine nominations. The original London production opened at the Palace Theatre on May 18, 1961. The show has enjoyed numerous productions and revivals since then. It was adapted as a 1965 film musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which won five Academy Awards.

They could have said much more about the Broadway musical, it appeared at the Lunt-Fontaine Theater and that Mary Martin starred in the original--and she was teriffic!

My Dad tookall of his married kids with spouses and me the youngest to see it, not too long before he passed away in Nov. 1965. Of curse, my Mom was there too! One other time we went to the same theatre to see, my favoriteHOW THE WEST WAS WON!!!!!
