Riders On The Storm was the last song Jim Morrison recorded with The Doors. The song was the second released from the band's 1971 album "L.A. Woman" and reached No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in the United States.

According to band member Robby Krieger, the song was inspired during an impromptu jam session of "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky", a 1948 cowboy song recorded by Stan Jones.

The lyrics of "Riders On The Storm" have had wide interpretations. Particularly the verse "There's a killer on the road, his brain is squirming like a toad." One view has it the verse is in reference to a screenplay Morrison wrote called "The Hitchhiker" where Morrison plays the lead of a drifter going on a killing spree. Another is the verse that refers to spree killer Billy Cook who slaughtered six people, including a young family, while hitchhiking through Missouri and California in 1950-51.

The lyric "Girl you gotta love your man", according to songfacts.com could be seen as Morrison's desperate plea to his longtime girlfriend Pamela.

The song was released in June 1971 and broke into the Billboard Hot 100 on July 3, 1971, the same day Jim Morrison died.
