Under the commands of Robert E. Lee and Samuel Cooper, soldiers of the Confederacy lived by the Motto “Deo Vindice” (God will vindicate us). The Confederate States of America (CSA) firmly believed that God was on their side during the American Civil War. This belief was often repeated by the CSA.

The Confederate Senator Thomas Semmes, in proposing the motto, took pains to stress that the CSA had "deviated in the most emphatic manner from the spirit that presided over the construction of the Constitution of the United States, which is silent on the subject of the Deity". He and others clearly expected this invocation to bring the Confederacy victory.

This motto was officially adopted in 1863 and engraved in London in 1864 on the Great Seal of the Confederate States.
