The name of the British secret agent played by Patrick McGoohan on the 1960 - 1968 British TV show "Danger Man" was John Drake. Drake is an undercover agent for an external intelligence agency that is part of an intergovernmental military alliance. Drake will find himself in danger and the outcomes can sometimes be very unhappy. Once in a while duty forces him to make decisions which lead to unfair consequences and suffering by real good people. This is a reason why Drake doesn't always do what his bosses tell him to do.

John Drake uses his intelligence, charm, and quick thinking rather than force to get in and out tough situations. He will play a role to infiltrate a situation. He has been a scout for a travel agency, naive soldier, embittered ex-convict, brainless playboy, imperious physician, opportunistic journalist, bumbling tourist, cold-blooded mercenary, bland diplomat, smarmy pop disc jockey, precise clerk, compulsive gambler, or impeccable butler. Drake does whatever it takes to get his job done. He is not infallible; but, he works hard to obtain success.

Within the series, Drake is an American. He works for NATO (The North Atlantic Treaty Organization). He jet-sets the globe, getting in danger while always being the chivalrous white knight who never lets spy work or others take advantage of him.
