Arnold was a Chester White breed of pig; he was treated as the "son" of Fred and Doris Ziffel, who didn't have any human children. Everyone in Hooterville (besides Oliver Douglas) accepted Arnold's status without question. Arnold's first appearance on television came in the second season of "Petticoat Junction" (1963 - 1970) in the episode, "A Matter of Communication".

Arnold Ziffel was the chic pig that was featured on the TV show "Green Acres" (1965 to 1971). This was the U.S. sit-com that aired on the CBS network. It was produced by Filmways, Inc.. The show was based on rural American humor and featured Oliver Douglas (Eddie Albert) with his wife Lisa (by Eva Gabor). They were known as city-dwellers who move to the unfamiliar farming environment of Hooterville.

In real life, Arnold's trainer was a man named Frank Inn. He trained almost all of the animals seen in the rural sit-com shows of the 1960s and 70s. At one point in time, Frank said that he had to use delicate psychology to train his pigs. Unlike other animals, he explained that he could can never force a pig (Arnold during the show) to do anything.

Arnold was a very popular TV personality. He won three Patsy Awards for Mr. Inn during his career in the 1960s.
