What was the name of the first band in which Bruce Springsteen played guitar?
Bruce Frederick Springsteen was born in Long Branch N.J. but lived most of his childhood in Freehold N.J. He was smitten with music and performing from the first time he set on eyes on Elvis Presley on the Ed Sullivan show. After much persuasion his mother bought him a guitar when he was 7 years old. At first it was too difficult for his small hands and he gave up.
When Springsteen was 13 he gave the guitar another try. He practiced incessantly and became quite good at the instrument. He was asked to join a local band at that time. That band was The Castiles.
The Castiles were formed in May 1965 by Paul Popkin (vocals, guitar), George Theiss (vocals, guitar), Frank Marziotti (bass) and Bart Haynes (drums). In 1965, Springsteen went to the house of Tex and Marion Vinyard, who sponsored young bands in town. They helped him become the lead guitarist of The Castiles, and later lead singer of the group. The Castiles recorded two original songs at a public recording studio in Brick Township, New Jersey and played a variety of venues, including Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village. Marion Vinyard said that she believed Springsteen when, as a young man, he said he was going to make it big.
