James Stewart's favorite horse to ride in motion pictures from 1950 to 1968 was a popular horse with the public named Pie. In coloring the horse was an impressive chestnut gelding. Pie, in fact was a horse that was part thoroughbred; the horse was then owned by Steve Meyers.

James Stewart at one point in time tried to buy Pie, but Meyers refused to sell. Thus Pie was used in movies by Stewart and other stars such as Audie Murphy. Pie was first ridden by 'Jimmy' Stewart in ‘Winchester 73’ (1950). At the age of 29, Pie retired after filming ‘Bandolero’ (1968) staring James Stewart, Dean Martin, and Raquel Welch.

Stewart once said about Pie: “The horse was amazing. I rode him for 22 years. I never was able to buy him .... But I liked this darned little horse. He was a little bit small, a little quarter horse and Arabian. I got to know him like a friend. I actually believed that he understood about making pictures."
