In the 1955 film, Mr. Roberts, directed by John Ford and Mervyn LeRoy, with an all star cast of Henry Fonda, James Cagney, Jack Lemmon and William Powell in his last on screen appearance, the tale is told of the United States Navy cargo ship Reluctant and her crew are stationed in the "backwater" areas of the Pacific Ocean.

This is a tale of a subordinate (Fonda) trying to protect the crew from the harsh actions of an unpopular captain (Cagney).

The film garnered Jack Lemmon an Oscar for best supporting actor.

What a great film. Hard to accept that those four terrific cast members in the photo have all been dead for 20 to 50 years. Makes me sad and also makes me feel older than dirt…which I guess I am.

Ensign Pulver (Lemon) stole the film and won the Oscar for his incredible role.

Ensign Pulver was a sequel made 9 years after this film. Directed by Joshua Logan. With Robert Walker Jr. as Pulver. Burl Ives as the Captain. Walter Matthau as Doc.

Terrific film, Fonda and Lemmon at their peaks. There was a sequel of sorts with Jack Lemmon, "Ensign Pulver." Not sure if I ever saw that one. I got Henry Fonda's autograph in 1974 backstage after he did Clarence Darrow in a 1-man show.
