"Silent Movie" is a 1976 American satirical comedy film co-written, directed by and starring Mel Brooks, and released by 20th Century Fox in 1976.

While indeed silent (except for one word, music, and numerous sound effects), the film is a parody of the silent film genre, particularly the slapstick comedies of Charlie Chaplin, Mack Sennett, and Buster Keaton.

It tells the story of director Mel Funn, attempting, with the help of his friends to direct the first silent film in 40 years, by hiring stars Anne Bancroft, Liza Minnelli, Burt Reynolds, James Caan, Marcel Marceau and Paul Newman to play in it, in order to prevent a hostile takeover on his producer's company. Among the film's most famous gags is the fact that the only audible word in the film is spoken by Marcel Marceau, a noted mime. He says in French "Non" to Mel Funn (Mel Brooks) when refusing a role in his silent film.

Marcel Marceau (1923-2007) was the legendary mime, who survived the Nazi occupation, and saved many children in WWII. He was regarded for his peerless style pantomime, moving audiences without uttering a single word, and was known to the world as a "master of silence."
