The Andrea Gail was originally named Miss Penny. It was a 72 foot long liner with a single shaft propeller that made commercial fishing trips. The captain and crew (a six-man crew) hoped for profitable fishing trips in the North Atlantic Ocean by catching swordfish. The sooner they got the catch they needed (more than 40,000 pounds of swordfish), the sooner they could return to port in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

On its last trip of the season in the middle of October 1991, the Andrea Gail was reported overdue and later declared lost at sea somewhere along the continental shelf near Sable Island. An extensive air and sea search was launched; it would eventually cover over 186,000 square nautical miles. Wreckage is the only thing that was ever found.
