In 1872 it became an offence to be drunk while in charge of carriages, horses, cattle and steam engines! The penalty for which was a fine not exceeding 40 shillings OR at the discretion of the court, imprisonment with or without hard labour for a term not exceeding one month.

George Smith, a 25 year old taxi driver, was the first person to be charged with drink-driving. He was fined 25 shillings at Marlborough Street Police Court in London on 10 September 1897. Smith had been arrested by Police Constable Russell after crashing his electric cab into the front of 165 New Bond Street.
