What was the real designation of the unit the 4077th MASH was based on?

Though Hollywood named its medical team the 4077th MASH, the real unit was the 43rd. It consisted of 100 soldiers who staffed two operating rooms and a 36-bed hospital--often packing up in 39 vehicles and moving closer to the battlefields to provide lifesaving medical help.

Steven Ernest Scott, The book was called "MASH...". Likewise, the original movie was called, "MASH". The military designaiton for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital is MASH. The asteriks (3) were only added for the TV series. But there are more serious problems with the question than that.

Sorry for the different answer, I DID do a lot of reasearch on this and everything I could find at the time talked about the 43rd. I was stationed in Uejongbu and later at Cp. Humphries when the 4077th was reflagged. The memorial out side of Uejongbu and at the cerimony all speak of the 43rd. I do apoligize for the wrong answer, it was not intentional.

Agree with David 100%. The answer is 8055th MASH, which was the original name of the unit.

Wikipedia says it was loosely based upon the 8055th MASH unit. Whatever it became is unimportant as the correct answer is not the 43rd MASH but the 8055th Mash as that was the first unit. Please get your act together and get your answers correct before you publish a question. That way you do not irritate your members, like me.
