Napoleon III, born Charles-Louis Napoleon in 1808 (also known as Louis-Napoleon), was nephew of Napoleon I. His father was Louis Bonaparte, younger brother to Napoleon I. He was involved in several failed coup attempts against the French King in 1836 and 1840, imprisoned in 1840 and escaped prison and fled to England in 1846.

The Revolution of 1848, with the abdication of the King, allowed for Napoleon III to return to France and campaign for President of the Second Republic. He won the election and became President in 1848. By 1851, he led a coup against the Second Republic (since he was limited to one term as President) and amended the constitution to retain power. In 1852 he declared himself as Emperor of the French. His reign ended in 1870 after the Battle of Sedan, when he was captured by Prussian forces during the Franco-Prussian War, he returned to exile in England and died in 1873.

Napoleon Bonaparte, French Revolutionary War general, First Consul of the Republic and Emperor of the French was born in 1769. He led France through a series of wars that resulted in the control of a large portion of Continental Europe. Napoleon abdicated in 1814 following an invasion of France, he was exiled to Elba and escaped to return and briefly rule (known as the Hundred Days) before being defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. His final exile was to St. Helena's where he died in 1821.
