What was the television name of the clown on TV's Howdy Doody Show?

Howdy Doody was a boy marionette and the main character of the TV-show of the same name. This program was considered the ancestor of all the following TV-shows for children. Howdy Doody used to appear on the screens accompanied by his friend, Clarabell the Clown. The clown was always completely silent. Clarabell, who always wore a baggy, striped costume, communicated only by honking a horn for "yes" or "no". But that was quite enough!
