Historians have now dug up enough facts to believe that something like the Trojan War really did occur. But, in ancient Greek mythology when Paris, a prince of Troy, abducted Helen and refused to give her back, Menalaus her husband and king of Sparta (also referred to as Achaea in the Iliad) declared war on Troy to win Helen back. Menalaus with his brother, Agamemnon, and others took a fleet of more than a thousand war ships to Troy.

Hence, according to the legend (true or false), the Trojan War was caused by the feelings of vanity, conceit, and arrogance that dominated the gods and goddesses of the Greek pantheon as well as Paris and Helen.

Throughout the Iliad, Homer paints Paris as a very vain, dishonest, and conceited man who in his actions with Helen played a very significant role in starting the Trojan War of the Bronze Age.
