Slavery in China has taken various forms throughout history. Slavery was abolished as a legally recognized institution, including in a 1909 law, fully enacted in 1910, although the practice continued until at least 1949. Illegal acts of forced labor and slavery in China continue to occur in the twenty-first century, but those found guilty of such crimes are punished harshly. The Chinese term for slave (nuli) can also be roughly translated into 'debtor', 'dependent', or 'subject'. Slaves in China were a very small part of the population and could include war prisoners, kidnap victims or people who had been sold.

Wow! I'm in the 1%? How naive one is if you haven't traveled and seen how free Americans really are. Take away the internet and cable/satellite TV, the present generation would be crippled. As a child, I had only a crystal radio I built, TV until I was nine. Now I feel so free after living abroad in 5 countries and driven a car in 22. Go abroad! See the world! See China, Cuba, Columbia, Egypt, etc.

Don Miller, you make traveling sound like you're taking a walk around the block. For someone who has traveled so extensively, you certainly sound ignorant and perhaps that 1% has a different connotation for you. Have you any idea how difficult it is for most people to travel; not to mention the cost factor?

What is sad is the sex trade that is slavery in any country and that includes the USA. I do not know the conditions of China today. But this evil practice is in our world and it needs to be stop.

Just a guess , mono ethnic culture. Slaves were a cultural based institution but conquered peoples were also allowed to participate. Jacket and tie only.
