The Mercedes-Benz 300SL was introduced in 1954 at the New York Auto Show. It was a two seat coupe with distinctive gull-wing doors. Immediately successful the 300SL stood alone with it's gull-wing door design, first ever production fuel-injection and worlds fastest top speed, at that time. 300 was the designation for the 3.0 litre engine displacement and SL stands for Sport Leicht (Sport Light). The engine was an Inline 6 cylinder, capable of 222 horsepower with a top speed of 160 mph.
