The Atlantic City Boardwalk officially opened in 1870, 16 years after Atlantic City was incorporated. It immediately attracted wealthy investors based on the prime view of the Atlantic Ocean. The first section of the boardwalk was dedicated on June 16, 1870 and has been growing ever since. At first, no stores were allowed to build within 30 feet of the wooden structure, which was often disassembled and stored in the winter off-season months to preserve the initial cost of $5,000 construction.

The original length was 1 mile, stretching from Gardner’s Basin to Ventnor City.

It is now home to casinos, shops, luxury hotels, and attractions and is considered one of the prime adult attractions in the US.

The board game Monopoly is based on businesses and streets in Atlantic City.
