The American Legion started in Paris, France during a caucus of the American Legion Expeditionary Force that Lt Col Theodore Roosevelt proposed. The American Legion was chartered by congress Sep 16, 1919 and the first meeting of the group was held in Minneapolis, MN. The American Legion will start the 100th birthday celebration in Aug 2018 at the conference in Minneapolis, MN and continuing into 2019 to its birthday on Sep 16th. The American Legion provides scholarships for many students and their Boy Scouts program is the first youth program developed. Past National Commander of The American Legion penned the GI Bill which was signed into law by Franklin Roosevelt on June 22, 1944. On July 9, 1954 The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation was formed. The American Legion presented a $1 million dollar check to the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Fund on Aug 26, 1982. In the early 90's The American Legion formed its first Junior Shooting Sports National Air Rifle Championships, the development of a job program to assist veteran's in obtaining well paying jobs in construction and the family support network to assist families of military personnel deployed during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. The American Legion also has the Auxiliary & Sons of the American Legion that have numerous programs for students & families. They also took the lead in developing "A Day to Remember" to mark the terrorist attacks on our nation. The American Legion is the "stongest" voice of all veterans.
