UCLA's streak of seven consecutive NCAA national championships occurred from 1967 - 1973. Today it seems hard to believe that this accomplishment will ever be exceeded. This run of ultimate wins in season after season of success has no equal in the history of college basketball.

Since the NCAA national tournament began in 1939, only seven college programs to date have ever pulled off back-to-back national championships. They are: Oklahoma A&M (1945, 1946), Kentucky (1948, 1949), San Francisco (1955, 1956), Cincinnati (1961, 1962), UCLA (1964, 1965), Duke (1991, 1992) and Florida (2006, 2007).

Now the likelihood of any NCAA basketball program being able to improve on head coach John Wooden’s sequence of success is extremely remote. In terms of total championship wins, UCLA now has 11. The next college basketball program with the most wins is the Kentucky Wildcats; it has a formidable 8 championship wins.

So it is very hard to find examples in any sport where a team displayed the type of dominance UCLA had from 1967 - 1973. The University of Iowa’s men’s wrestling program won 9 consecutive NCAA championships from 1978-1986. The Boston Celtics' streak of 8 consecutive NBA championships (1959-1966) surpasses the Boston Bruins' NHL achievements. Even as dominant as the MLB, New York Yankees, have been over the years, their longest cycle of World Series baseball championships is just five (1949-1953).

Today it will truly take an awe-inspiring college team to equal UCLA.
