John Herbert Dillinger, born June 22, 1903, died July 22, 1934. The notorious American gangster, was gunned down by federal agents outside a movie theater in Chicago. Dillinger had decided to take his then girlfriend Polly Hamilton along with her landlady, Ann Sage, to see the movie "Manhattan Melodrama" starring Clark Gable and William Powell. Ann Sage was an illegal alien in America and had trouble with the police; she made a deal with the FBI to turn over Dillinger in exchange she would be allowed to remain in America. While leaving the movie theater she pointed out Dillinger who was quickly taken down by the FBI before he could reach for his gun. John Dillinger died in the ally next to the movie theater.

As Dillinger grew into his late teens and early twenties, pranks and petty thefts turned to drinking, drug use and grand theft auto. In July 1923, Dillinger stole a car to impress a girl on a date and when he narrowly escaped arrest, joined the Navy the next day. John made it through basic training, but he didn’t have the discipline for military life and though he was assigned to the U.S.S. Utah (the same ship that sunk at Pearl Harbor), Dillinger literally jumped ship and returned home, where he was later dishonorably discharged. By the early 1930's he had moved on from petty thrift to bank robbery, becoming the FBI's number one most wanted fugitive. J. Edgar Hoover, the director of the FBI, made it a personal vendetta to bring John Dillinger in dead or alive.
