When was the original Social Security Act signed into law in the US?

The Social Security Act was created during the term of the 32nd president of the USA, Franklin Roosevelt. The act was signed into law and adopted by Congress in 1935. This made Franklin Roosevelt the first president of the US to advocate federal assistance for the elderly. Due to the the economic situation in the country in the depression era, many groups of people and individuals called for the financial assistance for the old, poor and the ones in need.

Every legal resident of the USA (there are some exceptions) must have an individual Social Security number to get a job. Workers pay special taxes, and their money goes to the special fund from which pensions and other benefits are paid. Social Security program provides such benefits as retirement income, disability income, income for survivors.

And it was kept in a separate account that was supposed to used only for social security. LBJ and his administration switched it to the general budget. It needs to go back to it's own account and used only for it's intended purpose.

People pay into Social Security, it is not a grant or entitlement.

John Schurman But, John, it is on the WORLD WIDE WEB! I don't know why anyone would complain about there being too many US questions. Allan Player and others in his country (wherever that may be) are certainly free to add their own flavour to the questions. I personaly find there are a lot of UK questions and I really like them as I feel I actually learns something. And there is a frequent poster with a raft of really interesting German questions.

SS is a good idea, but the oversight is not there. Too easy for some to take illegal advantage and rob the funds and deprive rightfully-deserving recipients from needed, critical funds.

The suspension of the payroll tax is a troubling event as that tax funds Social Security. A new way of eliminating it as the GOP has tried to do for years.

jonbroberts, It doesn't. You have to be a citizen to get any. AND part of Social Security goes towards the disabled who are unable to work. A friend's son gets Social Security, but even though he is 25, he has the mental capability of a 7 year old. He will never be able to work at a job. The money that immigrants receive is different from Social Security, and they are legal immigrants or refugees. Illegals don't want the government to know that they exist and won't even go to hospitals when needed or to the police. BUT illegals do pay taxes, they just don't receive any benefits for paying taxes.

FDR first won in 1932, so took office in ,March of 1933. It would take a couple of years to guide the bill through Congress, so it could be passed in 1935.
