When was "The Times" founded?
The Times is a British daily national newspaper based in London. It began in 1785 under the title The Daily Universal Register and became The Times on 1 January 1788. The Times is the first newspaper to have born that name, lending it to numerous other papers around the world, including The Times of India (founded in 1838), The Straits Times (Singapore) (1845), The Times of Ceylon (1846), The Irish Times (1859) and the Cape Times (South Africa) (1872).

A bit naughty this question as two dates were possible. It was founded in 1785, but did not appear under name until 1788. To give the option of both dates was unfair!

I was not aware that newspapers, with some form of The Times in them existed around the world, from the 1800's, and now, in various places in the USA. I only knew of The New York Times. Seems to me that 1788 is when it became The Times. The possible answers lead to guesswork rather than testing trivial knowledge

Call me Crazy, heck I'm from Indiana, so that is probably true anyway. However, when I hear "The Times" I automatically assume it is the British paper. If someone talks about any other type of "Times" paper they preclude it with the city, hence "New York Times," "Los Angeles Times," "Seattle Times," "Noblesville (IN) Times," etc. However the British paper is THE Times.

I wonder as to how newspapers survived in olden times when most people were either illiterate or too poor to afford to buy newspapers. Circulation figures must have been very small.

Got it. Didn’t read it ever. But ‘The Times’ is a London newspaper. It is mentioned in so many British movies, books and news reports that surely it can’t be mistaken for a newspaper that INCLUDES the name of the city or country of origin. Too much nit picking by those that answered incorrectly. It wasn’t too difficult to realise The Times was the first and only to bear that name.
