“When we've been there 10,000 years bright shining as the sun ...” Who gave us this verse of "Amazing Grace"?

This verse was first introduced as part of "Amazing Grace" in 1852, in Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin." It is not one of John Newton’s original verses. But its earliest outing is as a verse in the hymn "Jerusalem, My Happy Home," which is found in a 1790 book called "A Collection of Sacred Ballads."

These days the hymn is nearly always sung to the one tune. But before the tune we all know became standard, there were 20 other tunes to which John Newton's words were sung.
