The 1992 Winter Olympics were a winter multi-sport event celebrated from 8 to 23 February 1992 in Albertville, France. The games were the third to be held in France, after Chamonix in 1924 and Grenoble in 1968. They were the last Winter Olympics to be held the same year as the Summer Olympics.

A total of 64 nations sent athletes to compete in Albertville. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Armenia chose to form a Unified Team, while the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania had their own teams. Croatia and Slovenia, who were making their first appearance at the Winter Olympics, competed as independent nations after leaving Yugoslavia. The unified German team won most medals in the games, with a total of 10 gold medals, 10 silver and 6 bronze.

The 1992 Summer Olympics was celebrated in Barcelona, Catalonia, in Spain from July 25 to August 9, 1992. The Unified Team topped the medal table in Barcelona, winning 45 gold and 112 overall medals. Beginning in 1994, the International Olympic Committee decided to hold the games in alternating even-numbered years.

The 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics were thus the first to be held in a different year from the Summer Olympics. It is the first and the only one to be held two years after the previous Winter Olympics.
