Where are more than 60 percent of the United States' cut flowers grown?
More than 60 percent of the United States' cut flowers are grown in the state of California. California is America's top cut flower producer, with Florida second for its flowers. However, despite the long history of quality fresh flower production in the states of California, Florida, and Washington, many domestic growers are struggling to keep up with the foreign competition. Foreign imports dominate today's flower market, in some cases accounting for 90% or more of all U.S. sales within a particular category.
The Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG), formed in 1988 in the U.S., reports that in 2020 consumer sentiment towards floral gifting and receiving cut flowers has resulted with 73% of Americans saying they have a high appreciation of flowers, 88% of Americans saying that giving flowers makes them happy, while 80% saying that receiving flowers makes them feel the same way, and 92% of women telling us that the best reason to receive flowers as a gift is because someone just wants to offer them without any specific meaning behind the gesture.
All or most of the flower growers now in California accordingly say, "We are very proud to be leading the nation as the top cut flower producer. We will continue to work very hard to keep this special honor."
