What are buffer state countries?
A buffer state is a country lying between two rival or potentially hostile greater powers. Its existence can sometimes be thought to prevent conflict between them. A buffer state is sometimes a mutually agreed upon area lying between two greater powers, which is demilitarized in the sense of not hosting the military of either power (though it will usually have its own military forces). The invasion of a buffer state by one of the powers surrounding it will often result in war between the powers.

A classic example is Afghanistan further shown by its Wakhan corridor in the northeast. Created to separate Russian sphere of influence to the north and the British sphere in India to the south. Then after the British leave all hell breaks loose.

Poland, between western and eastern Europe is the classic buffer state. Belgium and Alsace Loraine between Germany and France have also served as buffer states, with Belgium being where some of the most brutal and costly battles of WW1 occured. Sparking the sad and famous poem, On Flanders Field; "On Flanders Field where Poppies grow between the crosses row on row..."
