Where did the 'Cactus Air Force' operate from during World War II?
Guadalcanal is the place where 'Cactus Air Force' operated from during World War II. Regarding the Cactus Air Force, it refers to the ensemble of Allied airpower assigned to the island of Guadalcanal from August 1942 until December 1942.
During the early stages of the Guadalcanal Campaign, there was a focus particularly from the aerial warfare service component of the United States Army about operating airplanes from Henderson Field on Guadalcanal. The term "Cactus" came from the Allied code name for the island. In 1943 the Cactus Air Force was subsumed into (AirSols), a joint command of Allied air units in the Solomon Islands. This command directed combat operations of all land-based air units in the Solomons.
AirSols units came from elements of the United States Navy (USN), United States Marine Corps (USMC), the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) and the Thirteenth Air Force, United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). The Allied fliers were opposed by the Japanese 11th Air Fleet and 4th Air Army, based at Rabaul, New Britain.
