Where did the northernmost land action of the American Civil War occur?
The St. Albans Raid was the northernmost land action of the American Civil War. It was a controversial raid from Canada by Confederate soldiers. It was done to rob banks and raise money. The hope was to trick the Union Army into diverting troops to defend their northern border against further raids. There were no more raids. It took place in St. Albans, Vermont, on October 19, 1864.
Overall, the American Civil War was a civil war in the United States that was fought from 1861 to 1865. Over a four year period, 237 named battles were fought, as were many more minor actions and skirmishes, which were often characterized by their bitter intensity and high casualties.
While tactically insignificant, the St. Albans Raid in 1864 shocked the Union. For the first time, Union soldiers worried about people they had left behind at home. But, in the end, the South surrendered six months after the raid.
