Echo Summit (also known as Johnson Pass) is a mountain pass in the western United States, located in eastern El Dorado County, California. At an elevation of 7,382 ft. (2,250 m) above sea level, it is the highest point on U.S. Route 50 in California, which traverses it at post mile 66.48 between Twin Bridges and Meyers, south of Lake Tahoe.

To replicate the high altitude of Mexico City, site of the 1968 Summer Olympics, officials from the United States Olympic Committee chose Echo Summit as the site of a high-altitude training camp as well as the 1968 U.S. Men's Final Olympic Track & Field Trials from Sept. 6-16, 1968.

Mexico City sits at 7,350 feet above sea level

Colorado Springs, CO was considered because it is at 6,008 feet above sea level.

Flagstaff, Arizona was considered because it's elevation is at 6,900 feet above sea level.

Los Cruces, NM was considered because its official elevation is 5,280 feet above sea level.
