Also known as the Hangingstone Rocks, the Cow and Calf Rocks are situated on Ilkley Moor in West Yorkshire in the north of England, (made famous by the song “On Ilkley Moor Baht ‘At”). They consist of an outcrop and boulder, although they do not really resemble cattle! Made of millstone grit, they are so named because one is large with the smaller one close by, like a cow and calf. They are popular with rock climbers of varying abilities and they provide an excellent view of the surrounding countryside.

A legend says that the Cow was split from the Calf when a giant, Rombald, was fleeing from an enemy and stamped on the rock as he leapt across the valley. The enemy was apparently his angry wife. She dropped the stones that she held in her skirt to form the nearby rock formation The Skirtful of Stones.
