Where is one standing if he or she is standing before the Brandenburg Gate?

The Brandenburg Gate is located in the capital of Germany, Berlin. It's a neoclassical arch dated from the 18th century. It's considered to be one of the most popular, beautiful and well-known sites of Germany. This triumphal arch is built on the place of city gate that was located on the start of the road from Berlin to Brandenburg.

It was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia as a sign of peace and built by architect Carl Gotthard Langhans from 1788 to 1791. It was fully restored after WW2. Nowadays it is considered to be one of the main European symbols of peace and unity.

Lived in Berlin, both sides, for several years--worked at the Humboldt University, saw this every day I went to work, love it!!!

Served in Berlin 1980-1982, in the British Army. Posted there on my 19th birthday! Was, undoubtedly, my favourite posting in my 24 years service. Would love to go back, but Disability & poor health has always stopped me. 3 months till I’m 60, was told I would be lucky to reach 50! Pretty sure I won’t get to go back now. Will always remember the place and the wonderful citizens fondly.

Kathy Best, By the way, while Berlin was divided, this was just on the GDR side of the border, and was NOT a border crossing. You couldn't even get closer than 2, maybe 3, blocks away from it on the East side. On the West side, you could get to the Wall, so if you see the Wall from that time with graffiti on it, that's the West.
