The Alboran Sea lies at the western entrance to the Mediterranean Sea between Spain and Morocco.

Having an area of approximately 57,000 square kilometres and a maximum depth of almost a kilometre and a half the sea is subject to many small earthquakes as the African seismic plate drives north into the European. The tiny, isolated island of Alborán, found almost centrally in the sea, is the tip of a volcano.

Fish species are a combination of both Atlantic and Mediterranean types. It contains one of the largest colonies of Bottlenose dolphins in the western Mediterranean. Conservancy organisations have shown some concern regarding over-fishing.
