The Crypt of Civilization is located at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Crypt of Civilization is considered to be the first conventional time capsule to be opened at a future date. The 20' x 10' x 10' crypt was welded shut on May 28, 1940. It is to be opened on May 28, 8113.

While 8113 seems like an odd year to pick, it is actually kind of appropriate. The first known recorded date was 4241 BCE, which was 6177 years before 1936 (when the idea for the crypt began). 6177 years after 1936 would be 8113.

It contains a wide range of artifacts, such as: voice recordings of Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Benito Mussolini, and Franklin Roosevelt, Artie Shaw recordings, vanity makeup mirror, 1 container of beer, sample of gold mesh, set of Lincoln logs, set of binoculars, 2 ashtrays, a tea kettle, a model of a stagecoach, an image of Buddha, set of A-C spark plugs, and an apparatus for teaching the English language in case it is no longer spoken.

No gold, silver, or jewels are included to tempt vandals.
