The University of Bologna (Università di Bologna) was established in 1088 and became the first university in the sense of a higher-learning in the world. Even the word university (universitas) was coined at its foundation.

The first serious document connected with medieval education was also connected with the University of Bologna. In 1158, Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa wrote Authentica habita, where the rules and rights of the Universities were set for the first time in European history. The document was created to grant several rights to the scholars, who traveled to Bologna to study law.
