The longest conveyor belt in the world is 61 miles (100 kms) long, width 1200 mm from the phosphate mines of Bucraa to the coast south of Laaoune. The belt moves about 2,000 Metric tonnes of rock phosphate every hour from the mines to El-Aaiun, where it is loaded and shipped. Boucraa is a town in Western Sahara south-east of the main city of El-Aaiun.

It is inhabited almost exclusively by employees of the Moroccan-controlled Boucraa phosphate industry. The phosphate deposit was estimated at 1.7 billion tons. The mining began there in 1972. Today, it produces around 3 million tons annually. The mining company found an inventive way to convey the ore to a grate. It built a conveyor belt to do the job. It carries the ore 61 miles across the desert to port of El-Aaium. This conveyor belt is the longest in the world. A phosphate is a chemical derivative of phosphoric acid. The transportation of phosphate fertilizers are its main use.
