Dame Angela Brigid Lansbury was born on October 16th 1925 in Regents Park, London. Her parents were Irish actress Moyna Macgill and English politician Edgar Lansbury. To escape the Blitz (the nightly German bombing of London during WWII), she moved to the United States with her mother and two younger brothers in 1940. After studying acting in New York City, she proceeded to Hollywood two years later, where she signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and made her film debuts in Gaslight (1944) and The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), earning her two Oscar nominations and a Golden Globe award.

Although she enjoyed an impressive career in films and the theatre, she is probably best remembered as writer and sleuth Jessica Fletcher in the TV series Murder She Wrote, which ran from 1984 to 1996, becoming one of the longest-running and most popular detective drama series in television history. Through Corymore Productions, a company that she co-owned with her husband Peter Shaw, Angela assumed ownership of the series and was its executive producer for the final four seasons.

Amongst her numerous awards, she received an Honorary Oscar and has won five Tony Awards, six Golden Globes, an Olivier Award, and one Grammy Award.

In 2011, Angela hinted that she might appear in one more final episode of Murder She Wrote. However, in 2015 she effectively quashed the idea due to her age.

She was made a Dame in 2014 by Queen Elizabeth II.
