Also known as the Good Friday earthquake, this one happened on Good Friday, March 27, 1964 at 5:36 pm, in Alaska.

The worst of it was felt in Anchorage, only 25 miles from the epicenter. It was a whopping 9.2 on the Richter scale and actually went on for 4 minutes and 38 seconds and killed 139 people directly. Small native villages were destroyed as well; the northern coast and inland of B.C.,Canada were affected too. Inland Alaska suffered also- in cities and homes the earthquake caused soil liquification, fissures, landslides, and much structural damage.

The resulting local tsunami destroyed Chenega, a small native town, among others along the coast. Other tsunamis affected places all over the world. Within the USA and Canada, Hawaii and Japan, coastlines were effected.

The total dollar estimated in damages in 1964, for Alaska, was 311 million dollars.
