Bartholdi was inspired by French law professor and politician Édouard René de Laboulaye, who is said to have commented in 1865 that any monument raised to American independence would properly be a joint project of the French and American peoples. He may have been minded to honor the Union victory in the American Civil War and the end of slavery. Due to the troubled political situation in France, work on the statue did not commence until the early 1870s. The answer is actually half true. Bartholdi originally proposed to build a statue in Egypt of a peasant woman in a robe, but it wasn't the same design as the statue of liberty. The whole Laboulaye thing is an urban legend.

Tis one of those trick questions. The design was similar to the Egyptian peasant woman lighthouse to be placed at the Northern entrance of the Suez Canal in Port Said. It was never erected. Therefore, it was not the 'original' statue for the United States. Researching is the only way to propeerly answer this question.

I don't know how this question got past review, but, the opening sentence is just wrong. Bartholdi proposed a project for the Suez, but the Franco-Prussian War stopped the project before it got past the rough sketch phase. Reusing ideas in art is a reality and exceptionally common. This doesn't mean it wasn't a gift. Nor does it mean that the SoL was EVER meant for Suez.

Totally false answer. Being French I know that the project of the "Fellahine" had nothing to do with the Statue of Liberty. The Egyptian khedive did not want to finance the project and a smaller statue of Ferdinand de Lesseps was erected in Suez for the opening of the Suez Canal. The Statue of Liberty was specifically designed for the 100th anniversary of the US Independence. Bartholdi did several models in terra-cotta, one can be seen in a Lyon museum. All experts agree that he used his mother's face (Charlotte Bartholdi) as model. Gustave Eiffel built the inside metallic structure in Levallois-Perret. A reduced model and exact copy of the statue is visible Ile de Grenelle on the Seine River in Paris. The project was delayed due to the war of 1870 but after Bartholdi went to the US and met President U.Grant the project went ahead. It's true that initially Edouard René de Laboulay was among the people who inspired Bartholdi for such a project. But the project was to create a coin with Mary Todd Lincoln's face (Abraham's widow) in honour of her husband and the abolition of slavery.

wish whoever made it kept it now we have every illegal, everyone who thinks they are being treated badly & want asylum coming to this country living off the hard working people of this country that are legal & pay taxes.
