Most people are aware that Russia lost millions of people during WW2, but few realize that China had the second largest loss of life. Japan attacked China and was conducting a war of conquest long before the U.S. entered WW2. In fact, the U.S. imposed sanctions against Japan because of China, which resulted in Japan's attack on the U.S. Russia's loss of life is said to be 26.6 million and China's is 20 million. For comparison both the U.S. and England lost a little less than 500,000 each. The battle of Stalingrad stands out as one of the most destructive battles to Russia in WW2. The Rape of Nanking was the worst case of mass murder against China by Japan in WW2.
