Which 2 states still use the firing squad as a form of execution in the United States?
In 2009, Idaho banned the use of firing squad as a form of execution, temporarily leaving Oklahoma as the only state utilizing this method. In March 2015, Utah joined Oklahoma in allowing execution by firing squad if the drugs for lethal injection were unavailable.

Bob Schmidt The death penalty has NEVER been a deterrent to crime, whether public or private.
Katherine Walker
Who would want the heart of a killer? I think it should be 50 states or even public hangings, I believe a lot of the crime we have will stop.
TJ Wahoo
William Laughlin Good point! However, it is certainly a deterrent to the recipient.

That kind of makes a mess out of those organs that could be harvested !
Bob Schmidt
You are right. Ever since we went to "secret" executions there is no deterent.

William Laughlin You are usually more astute than this. The death penalty is a deterrent to the recipient because they will be dead. You failed to see his attempt at humor.
KRC
Actually it is more states than just two.

elizawheeler, I totally disagree with you. Why must people make EVERYTHING about race !

Wrong:
As of 2024, Idaho, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Utah use the firing squad for the death penalty. In 2024, Tennessee were debating about using the firing squad. On March 20, 2023, the bill passed the Idaho state legislature, and was signed by the governor.

fdeisner, Idaho will become the fifth state to authorize the firing squad as a method of execution and may become the first state to mandatorily impose it on a death row prisoner since 1976. Idaho's Governor Brad Little signed HB 186 into law on March 24, 2023, and it goes into effect on July 1.Mar 28, 2023

dmarkc, the worst of the worst should be given the choice of execution or kept alive as study subjects, they can see what makes them tick!

Oklahoma has capital punishment but not the firing squad 🙄
fdeisner
Four states have firing squads for executions: Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah. South Carolina is the latest state to add this option in 3/4/2021. Utah has carried out all of the nation's three executions by firing squad since the 1970s, with the most recent in 4/5/010,

William Laughlin, You're wrong on 3 counts.
1. You can't prove a negative. People who are deterred from committing crimes don't commit crimes, so they're not counted.
2. Condemned criminals generally don't go gentle into that good night. Most of them fight & fight hard, & a number of them become even better than many lawyers.
3. One way the death penalty deters is shown by the jailed Mafia Don. He may be old & frail, but the most dangerous criminal won't touch him because he knows if he does, he's a dead man. The state death penalty is often capricious & subject to endless delays, so it doesn't always deter. But, sometimes it does.

elizawheeler, There are 10 inmates on death row in Kansas, 7 of them are white. What you are saying since there are too many white males on death row that makes it rasist. Two of the 3 are the Carr Brothers who killed 5 people and seriously wounded several others in a week long crime spree.
elizawheeler
Like most things in the United States, the death penalty is extremely racist. I don't believe in the death penalty, but if it's going to exist it needs to be completely unbiased. Since that is impossible, it should be federally outlawed.
