In the movie, 'Little Caesar,' Edward G. Robinson is famous for saying: "Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?" 'Little Caesar' begins with a quotation from the Book of Matthew printed on faux parchment: “ . . . for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.” So, it is clear from the start of the movie in light of this quote that Rico will die in the end. What will be the circumstances concerning his death?

In the picture, the hero (or antihero, as he is later called) rises from being a small time criminal to a singular big city gangster. He is then pursued and killed. This was, more or less, the arc of all 1930's mob pictures. There is a brutal man who believes himself invulnerable who ends up dead in the gutter.

In 'Little Caesar,' Edward G. Robinson, as Enrico Bandello (clearly a Capone figure) has noted that time for him has come to an end. As he is dying, he breathes the immortal line “Mother of Mercy, is this the end of Rico?” Clearly it is the end of his existence.
