James Doohan, best known as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, lost the middle finger of his right hand in World War II.

On March 3, 1920, Doohan was born in Canada, to Irish immigrant parents. He joined the Royal Canadian Artillery at the beginning of WW II. On D-Day, he was hit by six bullets. Four went in his leg, one in his chest, and one through his right middle finger.

He was saved from the bullet to the chest by a silver cigarette case his brother gave him. The most noticeable damage was to his right hand. The finger was amputated, something he concealed from the camera for most of his career. The hand can be seen, however, in a handful of episodes and a few scenes of the movie series.

Doohan died in 2005, due to complications of pulmonary fibrosis. A portion of his ashes was flown into space aboard the Falcon 9 rocket on May 22, 2012.
