Which actor starred in every Garry Marshall film, from "Pretty Woman" to "The Princess Diaries"?
Garry Marshall directed 18 movies before he passed in 2016, and actor Hector Elizondo was in every single one, from “Frankie and Johnny” (1991) to Marshall’s collection of films set around holidays: “Valentine’s Day” (2010), “New Year’s Eve” (2011), and “Mother’s Day” (2016).
Born December 22, 1936, Elizondo is an American character actor. He is known for playing Phillip Watters in the television series “Chicago Hope” (1994–2000) and Ed Alzate in the television series “Last Man Standing“ (2011-present).
A few of the memorable films he has appeared in are: “The Taking of Pelham 123“ (1974), “American Gigolo” (1980), “Beaches” (1988), “Leviathan” (1989), “Pretty Woman“ (1990), “Beverly Hills Cop III” (1994), “Dear God” (1996), and “Runaway Bride” (1999).
Elizondo received a Golden Globe nomination for Supporting Actor in 1991 for his role as hotel manager Barney Thompson in “Pretty Woman”, and he warmed hearts as the tough guy / nurturing pal Joe in “The Princess Diaries” (2001) and its sequel “The Princess Diaries II: Royal Engagement” (2004).
His other honors include (but are not limited to) an Obie Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and two ALMA Awards, as well as nominations for five Screen Actors Guild Awards.
In a 2016 interview with “Time” magazine, Elizondo looked back on his fond memories of the director. “We were both lovers of music, drummers, and reading. He thought ladies were the superior gender, as do I. He was my best friend.”
