Olivia Newton-John was born in Cambridge, England in 1948, to Brinley Newton-John from Cardiff and Irene Helene (née Born). Her father was an MI5 officer on the "Enigma project" at Bletchley Park, who took Rudolf Hess into custody during World War II. Olivia's Jewish maternal grandfather, Max Born, fled with his family to England from Germany before World War II to escape the Nazi regime.

After the war Born became headmaster at Cambridgeshire High School for Boys and he was in that role when Olivia was born in 1948. Max Born (1882 – 1970) was a German physicist, and mathematician who was instrumental in the development of quantum mechanics. Born won the 1954 Nobel Prize in Physics for his "fundamental research in quantum mechanics, especially in the statistical interpretation of the wave function".

Olivia Newton-John represented the UK in the Eurovision song contest in 1974. She finished in fourth place with the song "Long Live Love". She starred in the musical film "Grease" (1978), and its soundtrack is one of the most successful in history, with the single "You're the One That I Want", with John Travolta, her first UK number one single. She had another two UK number 1 singles with "Summer Nights",(with John Trovolta in 1978) and "Xanadu", (with the Electric Light Orchestra in 1980). Probably her greatest acting role was as Sandy Olsson, in "Grease" where she completely transforms herself during the film.
