Which airport is named after aviation pioneer Karl Wilhelm Otto Lilienthal?
Berlin Tegel “Otto Lilienthal” airport was named after the German aviation pioneer Karl Wilhelm Otto Lilienthal (1848 – 1896) in 1988.
He became known as the "flying man". He was the first person to make well-documented, successful flights with gliders. Newspapers published photographs of Lilienthal gliding, favourably influencing public and scientific opinion about the possibility of flying machines becoming practical.
Berlin Tegel became an airport for the allied forces' use in 1948, after WWII. Air France was the first airline to offer commercial flights in 1960.
Berlin Tegel Airport is the main international airport of Berlin, the federal capital of Germany. The airport is the fourth busiest airport in Germany, with 20.5 million passengers in 2017 and about 22 million in 2018.
It is located in the Tegel area, next to Tegeler Lake and within the Reinickendorf district. It is conveniently situated 9 km / 6 miles to the north-west of Berlin. The airport is a hub for Eurowings as well as a base for EasyJet.
Tegel Airport is notable for its hexagonal main terminal building around an open square, which makes walking distances as short as 30 m (98 ft) from the aircraft to the terminal exit.
Berlin Brandenburg Airport was originally intended to replace both Schönefeld and Berlin Tegel Airport and become the single commercial airport serving Berlin and the surrounding State of Brandenburg but this has not been forthcoming as of 2020.
