Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and also known as D.C. or Washington, is the capital city of the United States of America. It is located on the Potomac River bordering Maryland and Virginia. The city is named for George Washington, the first President of the United States and a Founding Father, and the federal district is named after Columbia, a female personification of the nation.

The Potomac River flows from the Potomac Highlands into the Chesapeake Bay. The river is approximately 405 miles (652 km) long, with a drainage area of about 14,700 square miles (38,000 km2). The river flows right through Washington, D.C. alongside world-famous structures like the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the Pentagon, the King Memorial, and the historic area of Georgetown.
